Question:
How do I preform a well chlorination?
Answer:
Well Shock & Recirculation Instructions-
1. Remove
well cap from well.
2. Pull excess
wiring out of well structure.
3. Pour 1.5
gl. of household bleach into well structure and around side of
well casing.
4. Put garden
hose into well structure and turn on at a medium flow.
5. Run hose
for 3-4 hours. (You may want to bypass water treatment during
this period.)
6. After
the hose has run for 3-4 hours, smell water from hose to check
for odor of chlorine.
7. Once the
odor is detected, turn off the hose and recap the well.
8. Now run
the water in the house one fixture at a time until you smell the
chlorine odor. Then shut off. After all fixtures and pipes are
chlorinated then put water treatment back in service.
Once the
chlorination procedure has been completed you must:
1. Let the
water sit for 3-4 hours without usage, this allows the chlorine
to sanitize your system.
2. After
3-4 hours of not using the water, you may now use the water for
flushing toilets and taking showers only. Do not use the water
for cooking, drinking, laundry or watering grass. *With taking
showers the chlorine concentration will be equivalent to a pool
chlorine level, people with sensitive skin and infants may want
to minimize exposure.
3. Over the
course of 3-5 days of toilet and shower use the chlorine level
is slowly worked out of the well. The chlorine needs to stay in
the well as long as possible to be effective. If chlorine is still
strong after 5 days you may want to start to run more water to
aid in flushing out the system.
4. A bacteria
retest can be preformed 5-7 days after all chlorine is gone.
